In the summertime, the afternoon heat causes huge thunderstorms to form in the dry sagebrush desert of the Intermountain West. One can watch them for miles over the vast emptiness of the landscape here. The rain held promise for those who tried to make it here, yet more often than not, the rain evaporated before it touched the ground in this inhospitable land – giving the people who tried to make it here yet another reason to move on…
These images were taken as Angus and I explored the back roads of the vast empty lands of Northwestern Utah, Southwestern Idaho, and West-Central Oregon. The locations listed are the highway and the nearest town – near being a relative term in the West. More often than not there is no town left at all, or if there is one its 30 or so miles away… -
